Penny Forward Podcast
🎧 New Penny Forward Podcast episode now available
We’re excited to share another inspiring conversation from the Penny Forward Podcast, highlighting blind people building bright futures through innovation, entrepreneurship, and practical problem-solving.
In this episode, hosts Chris Peterson and Liz Bottner sit down with Sri Ram, an engineer and serial entrepreneur based in San Francisco, to explore how lived experience with vision loss can drive meaningful, accessible technology.
Episode Overview
Sri Ram shares his personal journey of being diagnosed with cone rod dystrophy in his 30s and how adapting to vision loss reshaped both his career and his sense of purpose. Rather than stepping back, Sri leaned into community, self-directed learning, and partnerships, including working closely with organizations like Lighthouse for the Blind.
That experience ultimately led him to launch LuminAid, a company focused on increasing independence and agency for blind and low-vision professionals.
At the center of this conversation is Lumen, an iPhone app designed to act like a “secretary in your pocket.” Lumen allows users to manage Gmail entirely through natural voice conversation—summarizing inbox threads, replying to emails, starring messages, and composing new emails completely hands-free.
What Makes Lumen Different
During the episode, Sri explains why Lumen focuses first on email, one of the most critical tools for professional communication. For many blind professionals, managing a busy inbox can be time-consuming and cognitively demanding. Lumen’s voice-first approach is designed to reduce friction and restore confidence and efficiency in the workplace.
The conversation also explores:
- How Lumen uses conversational voice commands instead of rigid menus
- AI and privacy considerations, including the use of multiple AI providers
- Plans to expand beyond email into calendars, documents, and team communication tools
- Long-term goals to create a unified, voice-first “single thread” for productivity
- Upcoming accessibility features such as adjustable speaking speed and multiple voice options
Entrepreneurship, Mission, and Community
Sri also reflects on lessons learned from building his first company, including raising capital and learning the venture ecosystem “by doing.” He contrasts that experience with LuminAid, which is deeply mission-driven and grounded in the real needs of the blind and low-vision community.
Throughout the conversation, Sri emphasizes the importance of asking for help, staying connected to community, sharing what you learn, and taking small, concrete steps forward—especially for those navigating vision loss later in life or considering entrepreneurship for the first time.
