Social Security Introduces Optional Security PIN to Speed Up Calls
Starting this August, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is rolling out a new Security Authentication PIN (SAP) feature to enhance both security and convenience for my Social Security accountholders.
This optional PIN is designed to make phone calls to the SSA’s National 800 Number faster and safer, helping users verify their identity more quickly.
Why Add a Security PIN?
The SAP is part of the SSA’s commitment to modernizing service and protecting personal data. It offers key benefits:
- Faster service: Shaves about 3 minutes off the average call time—roughly a 30% reduction.
- Enhanced security: Adds a layer of protection when calling the SSA.
- Ease of use: Simple to activate and use with your existing my Social Security account.
How It Works
Once enrolled, you’ll use the SAP to verify your identity when calling the SSA. This allows representatives to assist you more efficiently.
Who Can Use the SAP?
Anyone with a my Social Security account can opt in. For those who don’t use the PIN, nothing changes—standard identity verification methods will still work, and in-person service remains available.
