Moving Forward, One Careful Step at a Time

Yesterday, I completed my partial hospitalization program. When I started, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I didn’t know how much it would help, or if it would help at all. Today, I can say something I didn’t think I’d be able to say this soon: I feel better than I imagined I would.

That said, I want to be honest about something. The good feelings I have right now are real but they’re also fragile.

Because of that, I’m not rushing back into life at full speed. I’m easing back into work slowly over the next few weeks. I’m continuing the healing process with additional care, including intensive outpatient programs. Recovery, at least for me, isn’t a finish line I just crossed, it’s something I have to keep choosing, every day.

What I’ve Learned

One of the things I’ve learned through this experience is just how imperfect our mental health system can be. Getting help often means doing your own research, making your own calls, advocating for yourself in ways that are hard even on a good day. When you’re struggling, it can feel nearly impossible.

And yet, it’s worth it.

I’m looking forward to simple things in a way I haven’t in a long time. Summer days spent in the sunshine. Time with my kids. More time and deeper connection with friends. Learning, slowly, how to practice something that doesn’t come naturally to me: self-compassion.

Thank You

I also want to say thank you.

Thank you to everyone who called, texted, or emailed over the last few weeks. Your support meant more than I can put into words. It helped carry me through some very hard days, and it continues to matter as I move forward.

A Message for Anyone Struggling

If you’re reading this and you’re dealing with anxiety, depression, or both, I want to leave you with this:

Don’t wait until it becomes an emergency to get help.

That’s what I did. And throughout this process, I’ve learned I’m not the only one. The people I met in treatment, people from all walks of life would tell you the same thing. Getting help earlier doesn’t mean things are “that bad.” It means you’re taking yourself seriously.

You deserve that.

Moving Forward

I’m still healing. I’m still learning. But I’m here, and for today, that’s enough.
