Bill Reintroduced to End Subminimum Wages for People with Disabilities
A major piece of legislation has been reintroduced in Congress that could significantly change employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
The Transformation to Competitive Integrated Employment Act (TCIEA) is designed to phase out the outdated practice of paying workers with disabilities subminimum wages. Under a nearly century-old law, certain employers can apply for a certificate that allows them to pay employees with disabilities less than the federal minimum wage. The TCIEA would eliminate these certificates and help transition affected workers into more inclusive and integrated employment settings.
Supporters of the bill argue that it is a long-overdue move toward fair wages and workplace equality. By ending subminimum wage practices, the legislation would help promote independence, dignity, and full participation in the workforce for people with disabilities.
If passed, the TCIEA would also include funding and support to help organizations and workers make the shift to competitive integrated employment models.
