Benefits Increasing for 75 Million Americans
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2026. The increase will impact approximately 75 million Americans receiving Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.
On average, retirement benefits will rise by about $56 per month starting in January 2026.
Over the past decade, COLA adjustments have averaged 3.1%, making the 2026 increase slightly below the long-term average but higher than 2025’s 2.5% adjustment.
When the Increase Takes Effect
- Social Security beneficiaries: COLA changes take effect in January 2026.
- SSI recipients: Increased payments begin December 31, 2025.
(Some individuals receive both Social Security and SSI benefits.)
SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano stated,
“The annual cost-of-living adjustment ensures benefits reflect today’s economic realities and continue to provide a foundation of security.”
Other Key Adjustments for 2026
In addition to the COLA, the maximum taxable earnings for Social Security will rise from $176,100 to $184,500.
SSA will begin notifying beneficiaries of their new benefit amounts in early December. Those with a my Social Security account can view their updated information securely online before mailed notices arrive.
