Research Title: Language Preferences of Blind and Visually Impaired Adults

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to understand the language preferences of adults with visual impairments in the United States.

Specific aims of the study:

  • The first aim of this study is to examine the preferences people with visual impairments have with respect to identity-first and person-first language.
  • The second aim of this study is to understand if language preferences change across various age groups.


Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study

Participants who are interested and consent will complete an online survey. The survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.


Proposed Participant Compensation

Yes, Participants will have the opportunity to put their names in for a drawing for a $25 gift card, following the Rowan University policies for compensating study participants. Eight gift cards will be available. Those who are interested in the incentive will be directed to a secondary survey to collect their name and email address.


Link or Instructions for Participants to Enter the Study

You may participate in this study if you are a person with a visual impairment who is 18 years of age or older and lives in the United States. Your participation will require you to complete a survey that will take approximately 15 minutes. This research study will take place online using Qualtrics, which has built-in accessibility features. Participants will have the opportunity to put their names in for a drawing for a $25 gift card.
